The best seasons for excursions, sightseeings and museum visits are spring and autumn. This is the time when the ancient town of the Kings and Primates, settled on the north-western slopes of the Pilis Hills on the banks of the Danube, shows its most beautiful face to the visitors. Esztergom, on the right bank of the Danube, and Sturovo, on the left bank, live together like Buda and Pest! The view from the Danube embankment in Sturovo is a mirror image of the Buda Castle seen from the Vigadó Square in Pest! Spend an unforgettable day on the banks of the river that connects the two towns… The Esztergom Castle Hill Monument Complex is a National Heritage and within that the Royal Castle is a European Heritage Site!

Meeting point

The easiest and most comfortable way to get to Esztergom from Budapest is by train. The frequent, comfortable train takes one hour to reach the modern Esztergom railway station. Guests are welcomed there by a guide and a Noddy train, which is then available for the group the whole day. After arrival, the Noddy train takes the group to the Basilica. Guests arriving with a coach will meet the guide at the free coach parking in front of the St. Adalbert Centre under the Basilica, the guide will wait for them the near the Primate’s Cellar, next to the lift.

Basilica

The program starts with a guided visit to the Hungarian main church, the Esztergom Cathedral and its Treasury. The Castle Hill can be reached with a lift from the Primate’s Cellars, by stairs or through walking. In the Treasury we shall see the world-famous Matthias Calvary, the liturgical objects used during the coronations of kings, and magnificent medieval and baroque jewellery and textiles, as well as very rare goldsmith and silversmith liturgical objects.

Before visiting the Castle Museum, we will have a break of about half an hour in the Panorama Hall Café situated on the 2nd floor of the Cathedral and from where we have a beautiful view on the Danube.

Royal Castle

We walk to the royal castle which is at an 80 meters distance from the Cathedral and houses the appartments of the first Hungarian royal dynasty, that of the Árpáds. This castle became later the Archbishop’s palace. This building complex was the first stone castle in Hungary and the main residence of 19 of our kings who held their royal administration in Esztergom.

Lunch time

We can help to arrange a group meal.

Noddy Train

After lunch we take the Noddy train and cross the Maria Valéria Bridge to Sturovo. After a sightseeing tour of the town by train, we visit the equestral statue of the Polish King Sobieski (John III), who lead the battle for the liberation of Sturovo-Esztergom from the Turks in 1683.

Sightseeing Cruise

We board the cruise boat at the nearby port. During the one-hour boat trip, guided through audioguides, we will learn about the Danube section around Esztergom and Sturovo, the history of the Maria Valeria Bridge, etc.

Free Time

After the cruise, a free time activity follows at the group’s discretion (walk along the Danube bank, explore the pubs and pastry shops of Sturovo’s Main street. There is also the possibility to do some shopping in the nearby Billa or Lidl supermarkets).

Farewell to Sturovo-Esztergom!

The Noddy train will take the guests back to the train station in Esztergom in time with the departure, or to the guests’ coach parked at the Mária Valéria bridge.
